Essential Test Requirements for Automotive Ethernet

We understand the critical role of reliable in-vehicle communication. Our off-the-shelf devices for media conversion, networking, and tapping of automotive data empower you to capture, analyze, and optimize your systems. But before hitting the road, ensuring your Automotive Ethernet network performs flawlessly is essential.

Here are some key test requirements to consider:

Conformance Testing

- Validate your network adheres to industry standards like IEEE 802.3bp (100BASE-T1) or IEEE 802.3bw (1000BASE-T1) for Automotive Ethernet.

- Tools like protocol analyzers and conformance testers can verify proper signal integrity, frame format, and error handling.

Physical Layer Testing

- Verify the integrity of your physical connection using tools like Vector Network Analyzers (VNAs) and oscilloscopes.

- These tests ensure minimal signal distortion, crosstalk, and noise within acceptable tolerances.

Interoperability Testing:

- Confirm seamless communication between different devices on your network, regardless of vendor.

- This ensures smooth data flow across your entire in-vehicle ecosystem.

Stress and Performance Testing

- Evaluate network behavior under extreme conditions, like high data loads or temperature fluctuations.

- This helps identify potential bottlenecks and areas for improvement before real-world deployment.

By incorporating these test requirements into your development process, you can ensure optimal performance and reliability for your Automotive Ethernet network. Additionally, our off-the-shelf devices can further enhance your testing capabilities:

The ANDi Free is a reduced and free version of the software tool ANDi Premium from Technica Engineering.

In 2009, Technica Engineering started the development of a software tool called ANDi (Automotive Network Diagnoser) for the evaluation and validation of Automotive Ethernet. Since then, ANDi has been evolving and improving, addressing the upcomingchallenges faced in testing automotive technologies and is used in real Automotive usage (SOP) 2013.

To operate safely, the in-vehicle network itself must be tested and each device’s performance needs to be validated individually and as a complete system. Proper testing of Automotive Ethernet should include the following:

  • Conformance testing makes sure that various vendors' data communication interoperates

  • Stress testing devices to determine their breaking points

  • Verifying resilience by testing worst-case scenarios

  • Understanding performance under different impairment conditions

  • Validating security features under attack conditions

Targeted solution areas:

  • Automotive Ethernet Testing

  • 100/1000Base-T1

  • 2,5/5/10 Gbps (NGBASE) Base-T1

  • 10/100/1000Base-T MultiGig Copper/Fiber & 10G (SFP+)

  • AVB/TSN, including Automotive gPTP, development and testing

  • RFC2544 (throughput, latency, frame loss)

  • AUTOSAR conformance

  • OPEN Alliance SIG conformance and compliance (TC8, TC11) testing

  • Performance testing (by traffic generation from thousands of simulated sources)

  • Security and vulnerability testing using an extensive library of malicious attacks
